I started storytelling when I was a mere 7 years old. I’d tell a story to anyone who’d listen and make it up completely at the drop of a dime. I started writing around 10 years old, putting short stories in my diary along with my journal entries. As a teen I’d entertained my friends on my stoop when we’d sit outside in the summertime with storytelling. My friends would usually say things like “The fact that you just made that up and it sounds absolutely real is crazy!”
Even now, there’s something about a made-up story that intrigues me and allows for an escape from the “real world.” I write because stories are just a series of beginnings – or at least in my mind they are. I have the ability to create something out of ink and paper and that in itself it’s amazing! The ability to create something that can affect someone is important to me. With the films out these days and the mostly mediocre shows on TV, I write because if by chance I have time to channel surf, it’s rare that I find a show that not only piques my interest, but keeps my interest. I write the stories that interest me, create the characters that I feel have complexity and makes the viewer want to know more. I also write the roles for myself that I haven’t been cast for in the past that I’d really like to portray. There is no excuse for me not to be in a film because of no one casting me – I cast myself and create characters that I think would be interesting enough for someone else to want to portray. I write because it just comes naturally I suppose. Now things that inspire me to write…that’s a whole different blog!
If there are any writers reading – why do YOU write, how often do you write, what do you like to write about?
